Naomh Barróg got its entry into the William Brennan Cup off on the right foot with a strong victory against Skerries A on Tuesday the 10th of July.

On board 1, Robert played the Advanced Caro-Kahn and some early trades left him with doubled pawns but open files for his Rooks. He lined his Queen and Bishop facing the enemy King and built up pressure. His opponent sacrificed his Rook for a Bishop, thinking he could back the exchange in the follow up. However, Robert found a tactic that pinned the Knight to the Queen, winning a piece. After trading pieces, Robert entered the endgame up a full Rook, causing his opponent to resign.

On board 2, Des opened the game with a Sicilian and his opponent played the unusual move of e5.After a few exchanges, White sacrificed a Knight on f7. Whilst Black made his King safe, White won a pawn. Black then gained activity and won back a pawn. Following a blunder by his opponent, Des exchanged Queens and won the exchange, a Bishop for a Rook. Black who was a piece and exchange up then put pressure on and following the win of another piece, forced checkmate.

On board 3, Sebastian played a Queen’s Gambit, where he created threats early on and the opponent reacted poorly. After developing his pieces he started an attack on the opponent’s King. After sacrificing a Bishop on move 14, he was able to force the King forward and win the Queen. After trading off more pieces, he was able to promote his d-pawn and checkmate his opponent with his 2 Queens.

On board 4, Shane drew his game

On board 5, Senan won his game.

On board 6, Seamus‘s opponent didn’t show up for the game so Seamus won by default and Skerries lost an additional point as a penalty.
